In the real railroad environment, the sound dissapates the further you get away from the locomotives.
The problem is in a typical model railroad room the sound is always present because it doesn't dissapate much when the locomotive isn't more than a couple of feet away at it's furthest point. (Unless you got a really BIG layout...)
