For me, the problem is very different with diesels than with steam. I turn all
the "idle" sounds way down or off on steam (air compressor, generator, etc.)
I'm really only interested in sounds that correspond to animated features (the
chuff <-> driver motion), plus sounds that occur in connection with events
(bell, whistle).
With diesels, it seems like the sounds that say "I'm working" include a lot
that has nothing to do with any visual event. The "running" sound is only a
slightly different pitch and volume than the "idle" sound. The only times I've
felt like there was too much sound is when there have been lots of diesels.
Maybe it's just me.

-Latest project: had a dip in the rails right next to a magnetic uncoupler that
caused the car to run off the magnet before I could do the "delayed action"
thing. Fixed by replacing with thicker ties, which were graded from normal to
thickest (under a switch, of course). What a mess!
