Dear Baffled,

Most mfg. do what is cheapest - just like auto mfg. They don't worry about them 
lasting more than 2 years.

NWSL makes different series. Some are beefy.
Hobbytown is good too. I use them also. 

I wouldn't think you could tighten a set screw sufficiently in a plastic 
collar. I guess it's because the collar is fat enough; you have many rounds of 
thread.  Arden
