Bill Wade has described some of the differences, but most people think AF was only the 19" radii--don't forget AF PikeMaster track that was 15" radii. AF had to modify both their GP-7 and the PA's. I don't think the Northern would run on the stuff and I can testify that my Hudson didn't like it.

My thoughts would be to check with the engineer who might have been working on the SHS's E-7 model. If they had engineering drawings, Lionel could arrange to steal them. Woop's isn't that's what happened some years back?

An important difference between A F and Lionel O-27 is A F has broader curves. There is no need to go to such extremes of swinging diesel pilots and dual motors for compensation of very sharp turns. I am sure >many< SHS locos spend their time running just fine on A F track with fixed pilots etc.

If only this info could get to the correct designers for future items. What works and is necessary for O-27 does not apply to S even for Hi Rail use.
