Jerry,

Thanks much for your posting of your Shay issue. All most all of them from
that run had the same problem so I have heard.

I have the same Shay that had the same issue before I got it.
http://www.lanestrains.com/Howie.htm Howie bought it and the gear split in
the first 3 feet of the first test run. So it sat in the box for many years
until the late Bill Daiker fixed and painted it for Howie. Now I am not sure
what Bill did to fix it. It was alluded to me from Howie that Bill
completely rebuilt the drive but maybe it was just replacing the broken
gear. That drive is very intimidating when you first look at it.

Yours is the only other #12 I have seen disassembled. It has been a while
since mine was apart. I hope to never have to take it apart again! It is
VERY tight and until a month ago was by far the most difficult DCC
installation I had ever done to date. I hate having wires go between the
loco and tenders so having sound was not important to me. Further I wanted
to keep it as close to what it was like when Howie owned it as possible. I
used an NCE N Scale decoder shoehorned between the motor and the cover (Ash)
pan. It is TIGHT I tell ya!

But yes #12 does run amazingly well. Mine is standard gauge too. I am glad
it is standard gauge because I would want the Shay because it was Howie's
but am very sure I will never have narrow gauge track. At least I can run
it.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
