Group,

I don't have any first hand information as to why AM painted the NYC P&LE bay
window caboose that you have red. Nor do I have information on P&LE caboose
#511.

However, in a book that I have, "Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad in Color"
volume 2, a Morning Sun Books publication, there is a picture on page 67 of
P&LE #506 bay window caboose painted caboose red with a NYCS logo at a 1959
Pittsburgh Railroad Fair. According to the caption, #506 was built in 1950. The
caption comments on the debate as to whether any P&LE cabeese of this
generation were ever painted red, but this photo proves that at least one was
for some period of time!

With regard to the prototype, the caboose on page 67 is a NYC-type steel
caboose with a short, small bay window and is different from the AM model. In
the same book, on page 112, P&LE bay window caboose #510 is shown in 1970 and
it is close in design to the AM model -- but it's green with added PC logo.
