If you are looking for a great running switcher then SHS is the way to go. If you are firm on having the S12 you can get (at least at 1 time) special gearing to slow it down. In general ALL AM locos run well. But as you mentioned are sometimes tight for space in getting decoders and speakers installed. I don't have any S12 - yet. I am sure others here have gone in the direction you are asking.
