There are very few who can afford the time, space, and financial outlay to build and maintain a large layout. That's why the question, "what do I enjoy from the hobby" needs to be asked first before a major commitment is undertaken. I'd like to say that everyone interested in model railroading has space for an S Scale layout. The answer to the "what do I enjoy from the hobby" question will determine whether you'll be happy with the kind of railroad you can build. Lance Mindheim (HO), Trevor Marshall (S), and Mike Cougill (O) have discovered that even with a simple track plan and limited space a satisfying and challenging layout can be built. It's worth giving some thought.
