I left the upper Midwest in the mid 70's, so I really never caught the real declining years except for the occasional short trip. However, another favorite road, the Soo Line seemed to have many of the same issues but came out with a better ending. I traveled to the small rural communities that still had small roundhouses, well kept yards, clean diesels and heavier rail to run on.
