Our toy train past might be considered as "baggage" by some, but it IS in our
history and we can't change it.

It is also the reason many folks are IN scale model railroading today. Without
that "toy train" history, they would likely be doing something else.

True, some folks don't seem to want to move past that history, but so what?
Everyone is free to express themselves in this hobby how they see fit.

And our O Scale freinds (the 2-rail guys) have benefitted by the increased
interest in the 3-rail side of O. MTH, Atlas-O, Weaver, 3rd-Rail all cater to
both sides of the O-spectrum. Oddly, Lionel does not.

Yet, Lionel, IS beginning to cater to the scale side of S. They're not there
yet, but I give them point for making the attempt. Lionel could have just as
easily not bothered.

Oddly, Lionel's attempts will likely succeed or fail based on how the
relatively small S scale market reacts. I think that's why the diesels are the
only thing with scale wheels right now. If they don't sell in the scale
market, they can inexpensively default back to Flyer wheelsets and just go
after the Flyer/HiRail folks, and we can go on and complain on how they're
ignoring the scale market.
