Ed,     
        I did find a photo of an  Empire State Express coach from later years 
without the skirts removed, so I'll try to see what I can see.  The problem 
with those cars is that they were delivered with skirts, so the builders photos 
in the Randall book show little detail.  The same book doesn't show an 
underbody drawing for these pre-war (day of the  war, if you know the whole 
story) cars, and since they are coaches, diners, and RPO's they don't show up 
in other references I have that would tell us things like the AC system used.  
I would tell you it is safe to say they didn't use the Waukesha Ice Engine or 
the Carrier-Safety AC units offered by Bob M.
