Rich,
If it wasn't for daily maint. on the 1:1 scale, how many derailments would be 
attributed to falty couplers.

While I'm sure I've replaced a couple of knuckle springs over the past 40 
years, it hasn't been a major issue with me in either HO or S.  The operational 
advantages far outweigh replacing an easily repleaced spring once in a while.

Things that move require the occasional maintenance or repair.  I also recall 
the old Model Die Casting HO knuckle coupler sticking a lot or not latching 
when coupling up.

Even the protoype has problems with couplers now and again.
