I had the same problem many years ago.  We resoldered the offending 
brush and things are holding their own.  I love that engine, but I 
haven't had the chance to fix the lighting circuit from my DC days.  I 
had built a PFM circuit that would keep the numberboards lit while the 
lights would change directions.  The circuit wasn't hard to build, but 
building it small enough to fit in that little guy was a challenge--it 
remains there, just unplugged.
