While Dave's reply is novel, and 1 I would not have thought of, I just will
not do a dual decoder - **ever**. If your reasoning for doing it is just
because you already have the decoders that still would not be good enough
for me. You have not done it and are already questions how to do the
programming.  It has been a while ago but MRC made some sound units. I
bought 3 of them and eventually threw 2 of them out without taking them out
of the box. I don't think you will be happy with the sounds. By the time you
find out there will be time spent on the installation.

 

There are a number of "HO" decoders that have handled whatever S Scale has
to offer so it is not a motor capacity thing. A single decoder just greatly
simplifies the installation.
