  That might be a good product for some small manufacturer to try. Small half 
plates to glue on completed track, and as Bob suggested make them in two styles 
, one with a notch for ties that are spiked and one with a cast on spike head 
for ties that are not spiked. In many places on a layout the tie plates would 
only need to be added to the side of the rail facing the aisle as the back side 
tie plate could not be seen. for those who use flextrack and hand layed 
switches this would give a better match of appearance with little extra effort.
 I've experimented with gluing cardboard tie plates on a finished turnout and 
it looked better than it did without them, cutting and notching the cardboard 
was a bit tedious so I can see where these tieplates might sell if they were
