That's what buddies do Ed.....disagree and still remain buddies. VBG. But, in 
this case MTH has obviously done their homework since you report their "S" 
locos run slow and smooth. My prejudice comes from my O scale experience with 
the Atlas and Lionel China Drives that needed a lot of work or electronics to 
make them behave. Guys were wiring the two motors in parallel to slow them down 
and they still preformed poorly below 4-5 SMPH, especially on straight DC. 
Switching was out of the question. 

But, I understand later offerings from these two manufacturers ran better, but 
I never went back after my 1st experience. This still leaves a couple of issues 
like having a motor sticking up in the cab instead of a cab interior, tons of 
electronics to control the two motors and the exposed gears between the truck 
and the sideframes.....at least on the O scale locos. I've never seen the MTH 
or Lional "S" locos 1st hand so I'll have to hold my judgement.
