Hi Ed, A useful speed range is one that runs at scale speed at full voltage
and at slow speed at minimum voltage. The twin motor china drive diesels O
scale diesels are geared to run at 150 MPH or greater when the real ones
usually ran at 65 MPH. So half the throttle response is wasted on a speed range
we never need. Toy train guys don't mind a loco that's too fast and the
companies can save money on gear design and assembly cost by using simplified
trucks with motors attached. They are not doing it because it's better or even
as good ,they are doing it because folks will still buy them at a greater
profit margin.
I'm not sure why we are discussing the new lionel stuff when my comments were
in response to the new Kato locos? Lionel has never been a scale manufacturer
so anything we get from them is a bonus, but Kato has produced some nice scale
locos over the years and I'd hate to see them change direction....DaveBranum
