Just to add to Bill's comments...

When I did my WP Zephyrette (RDC-2) I discovered that the nickel plated body
had been over-painted with a clear coat (factory?). It had turned a slight
yellow tint over the years so I removed it with Scale Coat remover. No damage
was done to the nickel silver plating.

I was never really happy with the effect of the nickel plating on the model and
would do as Bill has done if I were to do another; paint the entire model with
Alclad II (black undercoat and polished aluminum). This makes for a nice match
to prototype SS, at least in my layout lighting conditions. The Alclad WILL
show decal film (as does the nickel plating) because of the difference in
surface reflection. I do NOT overspray the Alclad II with a clear coat,
however, as that would defeat the purpose of using Alcald II to start with.
That's why I cut the individual letters apart so as to minimize this effect.
