Bud,

You’ve got the assembly of the 802/808 down! I use them exclusively, and strip
the old HO couplers off of any cars I acquire that might have them. I’ll have
to remember the soldering iron trick next time.

While the 802/808 and the #5 (or whatever HO coupler) will couple up, and
perhaps uncouple with a magnet (I don’t use magnets), the combination is nearly
impossible to uncouple with a pick, the method that I and all the operators
that I know use.

boB sent me a couple pair of Protomax to try out. I do like them and ya can't
beat the price, its just that I had stocked up on Kadee 802/808's (the "8's
being the brown ones)and have more than enough for a lot more rolling stock
than I currently own.
As for the finicky assembly, I usually do several pair at once and this rhythm
helps make the whole process easier. I also add a short length of brass rod and
sometimes styrene rod inside the draft gear spring as Kadee had recommended. I
end up with minimal spring travel and I do mean minimal. I've been "sealing the
lids" on the box by a quick touch of a hot soldering gun to the rear of the box
across the lid and the top of the box.
