What boB didn't mention is the Walthers couplers have the magic ingredient in S 
scale...  They are dirt cheap.   If you watch for sales you can get 20 pair for 
20 bucks.   Worth taking the risk for all your other questions...

For the record, I use 802's and the Walthers Protomax and have never had any 
coupler separation issues with either.   I have some models still equipped with 
Kadee #5 couplers from my (very) early days.  A couple of the #5's have broken 
on heavy trains, but so few I would never consider replacing them 'en masse'.   
If one breaks, I upgrade that particular car.   If it happens once a year, 
that's a lot...
