Rhett, That number is one of the early Lackawanna ones that AM did. 1853 is an
Erie-Lackawanna number. Shortly after the merger in 1960, some only received
new numbers while retaining their "Lackawanna" lettering. Someone either
brought this to AM's attention, or they discovered it themselves, and they then
renumbered them to the 860-861. 1853 would've been 853 pre-merger and was one
of the phase I units. One spotting feature of the phase II's was the "dipped"
side running board handrails as on the AM's. The phase I's had straight
handrails. I'd have to look it up, but 853/1853 might have been one with a
steam generator for passenger service. FWIW, the DL&W Trainmasters were long
hood forward.
Give me a weekend to think it over, (unless someone else wants it)the number
is too late for my time period of the pre 10-60 merger.
