Gentlemen, First off I don't think cracked gears are unique to AM or S scale. I think anybody who has been trying to get brass to work properly has also experienced the trials in discovering problems sometimes after years of use (any car I've ever owned has had such issues--"that model XXX had bad transmissions, bad paint"--pick your problem. PBL's first Shay had cracked gear issues too--I went through that, not to mention OMI E units, SD-40's and some I don't remember anymore. I would also suspect that obtaining a new axle or two from AM might be easier that trying to find parts for older Athearn or Atlas engines.

My original FP-7's have all metal gears so they better not crack!

One thing that has concerned me about the 'newer' sprung trucks that might have some bearing on cracked gears on the SD-60's, U-boats and any other engines equipped with those sprung trucks. The sprung feature sounds good, but this skeptic thinks that if you are forcing a wheel either up or down, the exact opposite is happening on the opposite wheel. This can't be good for the mesh of the gears over time. Maybe I'm over reacting as I don't think we have to climb up over nickels placed on the rails, but who knows?

What are the NWSL geared wheelset stock numbers for the variations involved. The NWSL list I have says only before or after 2003, the set of I got a few months ago has flat interface surfaces, while the mating surfaces in the truck block are concave surfaces.

Last spring I purchased a pair of SD60 demonstrator schemes at a
model RR show. One of the units didn't run very well. When I took
it apart one of the axles had a cracked gear. It didn't matter so
much because I had to replace the wheels anyway because they were
highrail. Rather than order from AM and get .125 code wheels I
    decided to order from NWSL.

Still I wondered whether this was a one-off problem or something
more systemic. I've had issues with AM universal joint sockets
cracking on the motor and other shafts in the power train.
