Hi Ben...Just to clarify, please note I did not say or imply that all plastic 
gears will always crack in 5-10 years.  What I did say is that it is not a rare 
event and it usually will typically happen quite some time after the warranty 
period has expired.  If it happens at all, it can take 5-10 years before it 
becomes obvious to the owner.  I have no idea what percentage of plastic gears 
actually crack eventually.  That would be an interesting statistic to find out
