When I worked on the Santa Fe in the early 1960¹s I saw all manner of repaints, mixed consists of passenger cars and stuff that was hardly recognizable as ATSF.
Bottom line: The Santa Fe, like all rail roads used whatever would run and whatever was handy that wasn¹t in the shop. Some stuff would barely run but would be pressed into service anyway, even on the main line. Many of the old photos we use to detail models were staged for photography PR purposes and bare little resemblance to what was actually rolling on a daily revenue basis. With all due respect, modelers who have not had the opportunity to work on the 1:1 rail road have a very narrow view, and if I may suggest, an unrealistic view of what ³prototype² means. Roy Inman
