I've used dry transfers on well over 300 cars - there are applications where I
prefer them and applications where decals work better. It is not always
necessary, but you can preheat them with a bulb. When I have to do that, I
prefer a warm (not hot) piece of glass - use a plate or cup warmer to maintain
it. I found a run of CDS dry transfers that were defective and would not
"transfer". I think it was a manufacturing issue as I have many much older
sets that work just fine. Roger uses dull cote, I have used semi and gloss
too with equally good results. I believe having a nice even coated surface is
the key. And, BTW, transfers do not work well on metallic paints like chrome
and silver...

I don't think I would ever recommend one over another - the right "tool" for
the right application so to speak. It does take some practice and patience -
what else is new with modeling...
