I recently picked up a very nice LED flashlight branded with the name Larry by Nebro on it. It has 8 LED's in a row and resembles a swollen ballpoint pen. I hope it's powerful enough for some of my photo work and I know it was priced fairly. I purchased it from a store catering to contractors--not a typical box store.

At the Denver convention one of the judges, a female who seemed to take her responsibilities very seriously, had both a flash light and a mirror to peek under the cars.

And regarding those leg extensions and PVC pipe-lights--to me they were great. I think they were used for two years as Michael mentions. As I recall, at St. Louis they had been laid in the corner and not used. Additionally as Bill Fraley mentions, photo contests have the same issues to some degree. Most groups setup an easel with two flood lights at a 45 degree angle. The two lights have to register a certain brightness level and a certain color balance. I've seen several 'officials' each bring out their light meters and a color temperature meters so they all agree standards have been met--yes those guys can get really fussy! Each contest photo is brought before the judges and mounted on that easel. The person moving the artwork wears white gloves at the events I've attended, which have been State PPofA conventions. I would feel that local camera club contests are much more informal.

Maybe complaints about room lighting are just a symptom of our collective aging and increasingly poor eye sight! <G>

I noticed a few folks in Scranton carrying small LED flashlights and I believe Dan Navarre at River Raisin Models had one to light up fine detail on his brass models to potential customers. Might be we should all start carrying them. Personally I don't enter model contests, I'm not that good a modeler, but in the future contest judges might be given a small LED flashlight as a token of NASG's appreciation for their service and to just flat help them see. Sounds like an idea that could be communicated to NASG's contest chairman -- Monte Heppe...

Built on 8' sections of half round (cut lengthwise) large diameter white PVC to provide the light reflector. Worked pretty well I thought. They were passed on to the Bristol Club for the 2008 convention and we passed them on to the next convention. I am not sure where they are now. But I thought it was nice that nice models got better lighting...
