<< 1) Which years did Gilbert put E units in vs the flip switches?

This practice started in 1958 (e.g., the M&StL 21813).

<< 2) The new Lionel Baldwin's - same shell as the Gilbert ones? Swap between
the
old and new? >>

Judging by the Lionel version I had in my hands, the major changes in the old
tooling is in the improvement of external details. They should be able to be
swapped, possibly after some minor work.

<< 3) On the Gilbert ones, did they all have couplers running around on the
pin?
Mine flops around so much I can't imagin trying to do real switching with
it...
let along switching without the E unit. >>

The couplers should be fitted with a brass shim return spring to keep the
coupler centered. However, the REAL original mission of the Baldwins was to be a
cheapy engine to pull starter sets, not a serious yard goat. One bought 0-8-0s
and GPs to do that job. The new (geared down) Lionel version should prove to
be able to do switching.
