Ok, it appears to me that the overly aggressive flag settings
mentioned above cause gcc 3.4.x to output wrong code. Since libm4ri
does not contain a single sse3 instruction I think we might want to
use less aggressive flags in general or at least for anything prior to
gcc 4.x.

Martin: thoughts?  Did you actually see any difference from using
those rather aggressive flags. Numpy/scipy did similar things for the
special functions code and they stopped doing that since the resulting
code just went down in flames due to segfaults way too often.
