As a word of support: even though I am usually quiet on this topic, I
just wanted to say that I *do* care about portability. That's
precisely why I write most of my code in python, so that I don't have
to worry about it! And I am really glad that you and others are
spending so much energy on the porting of Sage.

Granted, I am not going to run the tests myself on many platforms by
hand, because it's too time consuming and a machine could do it for
me. But I'd love to be alerted by an automated test bot when a patch
of mine breaks on some exotic platform; and then I'll sure take the
time to go on that platform to debug and fix my patch.

I guess most Sage's developers share a similar view.
