That's what we did with matplotlib (version it, I mean). I think it's
the safest thing.

So every version of matplotlib gets its own directory in DOT_SAGE? That doesn't seem like it scales very well (i.e., it clutters things up a lot). At least we should make a matplotlib directory inside DOT_SAGE where all those versioned directories can be grouped.
