OK, the main problem is I don't know what browser extension would do
the trick with which editor, so I wouldn't know how difficult it would
be to get working for myself, let alone how difficult it would be for
a student who is using a different computer system with who-knows-
which browser and who might not have a favourite editor at all.

So the hurdle is not entirely with the student :-).

Don't underestimate how little very smart people with very good
mathematical skills need to know about computers to function nowadays!
It's very useful if sage can provide an environment where such people
can make some first steps in learning to program without them having
to get bogged down in environment configuration. The notebook goes a
long way in that direction. It just falls a little short for editing,
say, a class definition.
