I have 512 MB RAM. I created a 1 GB swap file and got the same error.

familiar with it but I will try it today.
If you're not compiling a sage with a very recent libm4rie, 1GB+0.5GB
will *not* be enough.
Let me remind you what Leif wrote earlier: M4RIE got upgraded in Sage
5.10.beta1.
Unfortunately the new spkg at
http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/14336 also needs patching the
Sage library, so (presumably) cannot be installed by simply replacing
the old one (i.e., the Sage library afterwards wouldn't build).

I know 5.9 is the last stable, but if you want to compile it, you'll
need to push the available memory (RAM+swap) much higher ; something
like 2.5GB to 3GB in my experience.
