I use Sage all the time on a windows XP machine and firefox, and its usually fine (lots of jmol applets can cause memory problems but that's not specific to that setup). But I am using a remote server usually, not virtualbox. I did briefly test virtualbox on that setup and I think it worked OK for applets. I'll double-check on Monday.
