Comment:

 I did apply polynomial_gf2x.patch on a vanilla 3.1.4, after having applied
 the patch from #4304.
 I can reproduce Martin's timings, and I checked that all the doctests
 above are ok now. Thus I give
 a positive review for that patch.

 Of course somebody should review my own patch, or should we create a
 separate ticket, so that we can include
 Martin's patch?
