 I'll see whether using the low-level functions `PyList_GET_ITEM` and
 friends will help to reduce the slow-down. After all, when doing
 `tailsets[j]`, we already now that `j` is not out of bounds. Hence, we can
 drop the checks done in `O in tailsets[j]` and could as well do `O in
 <set>PyList_GET_ITEM(tailsets, j)`.
