> Have you taken into account that the first time running, lazy star
imports are not lazy at all? It executes the actual import to cache which
symbols get defined by the star import (the files in `.sage/cache`). I
think this cache presently always gets deleted after `sage -b`. If testing
`startup.py` is the first sage run after that, you cannot expect lazy
behaviour.

Thanks for the explanation -- what am I now supposed to do to get things
in order? Should I keep the lazy star import and change doctest in
startup.py, or should I rather not do the star import?
