I agree we don't want to deal with ssuch a mess, but the original goal of
this ticket is to let Sage install on systems without a system wide
libpng.
Of course we also want it to install on systems with a system wide
conflicting libpng...
By the way it seems mercurial triggers the ImageIO thingy because it uses
EDITOR:
