`sizeof(unsigned long)==8` (instead of using `uint64_t` where
appropriate), which makes it pretty hard to port it to 32-bit systems (or
other systems on which that assumption is false).
It seems C99 guarantees the existence of `uint_fast64_t`. Perhaps using
that would be portable?
