After chatting with @burcin, I decided to do 1. The new patch implements
deprecation by retaining all the old code with names prefixed by an
underscore. I preserved all the old doctests (which reference the
underscored names). In the new code, I overrode `__call__` if more than 2
arguments are given.
Ready for review!
