 Bill,

 You might ask Robert Bradshaw about the clean_point_list function; I think
 he was the original author, and might have some insight.  Also, when
 making things better (i.e., smoother boundaries), we'll probably subdivide
 regions, which means that we'll evaluate more u,v coordinates to get more
 vertices.  Those vertices could mess up a nice numbering grid that exists
 now, so it might be nice to just store the u,v coordinates of each vertex
 anyway.  Of course, we could just cross that bridge when it comes, too.
