Unfortunately, that would
* start up Maxima the first time, which takes quite a while
* use Maxima each and every time we create a symbolic variable, which
would take some time
I don't think people would be pleased with the slowdown this would cause.
That's why I'm wondering whether there might be some other workaround
along these lines but less draconian. Variables ''are'' complex by
default, just not when we send them to Maxima.
