OK so I tried things out a little bit. I reproduced Volker's problem
locally (yuck). Removing setupext.py.patch enabled it to build and install
on my linux x86_64 box. For various reasons I won't be starting testing
things on maverick before Wednesday (OK Tuesday for most of you).
