Also if we really want to patch, let's just not make it as a fallback but
as a full blown configuration. After all the default you feed to build on
OS X are just as valid on other platforms. I also notice that the building
recommendations for matplotlib upstream for OS X will lead you to have
pkg-config installed, either explicitly or as a dependency.
