 OK, so the method does do something like Cholesky decomposition, except
 that it never takes square roots and has some diagonal factors. (Don't get
 me wrong: this makes the method more useful, not wrong.) I've added
 documentation. Warning: branch change.

 I fear this is all I can do for this ticket, though...
