Sorry, the first differences must have crept back in in the merge. Don't
know how that happened, but now that #13525 is merged that's easier to see
and I'll get rid of them. You're also absolutely right about the code you
quote above and I had planned to do so. The code does still need to be
cleaned up and there might well be a couple of other places that can be
simplified. I'll try to do that in the next commits.
