 Yes, I actually wondered about the same thing when I read that discussion.
 I'd say I'll just make a few timings in order to see whether there's a
 significant advantage to not calculating the permutation / transformation.
 Surely, always calculating the permutation shouldn't hurt, so we can
 probably drop the {{{permutation}}} flag from the helper functions.
 After that, we can still check whether there should be a separate function
 for computing the transformation that sends something to normal form and
 one that only outputs the normal form.
