@Travis: You use the `canonical_embedding`, which gives a module
homomorphism, as a coercion in case of coercing but distinct base rings.
But is this clean? I thought module homomorphisms would only work over the
same base ring. I don't see what should go wrong, but it feels like
relying on indefinite behavior...
