 I think I was unclear -- sorry.  As I understand it, the code here isn't
 backward incompatible.  What I meant is that the uniform interface I
 envision probably isn't compatible with the current interface.  So the
 idea to release now, fix later (which I generally support!) would mean
 that we can't "fix" until after a year of deprecation.

 And I think this is about more than interface -- I think the code may have
 to be reorganized, with some methods moved to different classes, and there
 would need to be deprecation for that as well.

 I'm really frustrated about this too -- I'd hate to see this rot for
 another 3 years -- but I just can't convince myself it's good to release
 this as is.  Do you disagree?
