 No that I have removed the interfering library from the system I can
 compile `R` with an external bzlib library and gcc 5.1.0 and I don't
 experience any of these troubles.

 Still there are problems linking an external bzlib on OS X and gcc 5.1.0 -
 on some systems. This is very strange. Does the failed libR.so have an
 entry for libbz2 at all?
