Comment:

 This seems to work very nicely in that way.  I think this is certainly
 doing what I was hoping for.

 Then, from my point of view, the question is just how to deal with
 alerting the user that it's an optional test. Or is that necessary, since
 the test itself says `# optional - gambit`.  Maybe that's enough?  At
 least it's enough to send to sage-devel or somewhere and then there is
 sufficient info for them - I changed my mind.
